Top Things to do and Top Rated Tourist Attraction in Oulu

Top Things to do and Top Rated Tourist Attraction in Oulu: Rooster, Kitchen & Bar Oula, 1881 Uleåborg, Kauppatori.

Rooster

Inside a beautiful wooden building, Rooster has a minimalist Finnish-design interior. Burgers, such as its Lohiburgeri (salmon, marinated fennel and horseradish mayo), Vuohenjuustoburgeri (beef, grilled goat’s cheese, watermelon and fig balsamic) and Vegaanburgeri (gado gado, mango, rocket and red-onion compote), are a speciality. Light lunch dishes include spicy sweet potato lasagne or nettle and pepper soup. Hours vary seasonally.

Kitchen & Bar Oula

Beneath an igloo-inspired glass atrium, this restaurant inside the Lapland Hotel Oulu features outsized prints of Lapland scenes, such as spawning salmon. Gourmet Lappish dishes include cold-smoked Arctic perch soup with birch and fennel, chargrilled reindeer with redcurrant and moss jus, and smoked whitefish carpaccio with parsnip mayo and pickled dandelion, accompanied by an extensive wine list and Lapland-influenced cocktails.

Ravintola Hugo

Innovative cuisine using locally sourced products makes this elegant restaurant with white tablecloths and richly coloured walls a real Oulu highlight. Some outstanding flavour combinations feature in its menus (no à la carte), such as pike-perch with liquorice leaves and parsnip; lichen-smoked reindeer with wild mushrooms and powdered roast beetroot; and spruce and strawberry sorbet with clotted reindeer cream.

1881 Uleåborg

In an old timber warehouse near the kauppatori, this classy spot combines a traditional setting with chic Finnish style and creative cooking (smoked reindeer and morel terrine, Åland lamb with spruce-smoked potatoes, lingonberry crème brûlée with cloudberry meringue). The awning-shaded, glassed-in terrace by the water is one of Oulu’s loveliest summer spots.

Kauppatori

Oulu has one of Finland’s liveliest market squares, and its position at the waterfront makes it all the more appealing. The square is bordered by several old wooden storehouses now serving as restaurants, bars and craft shops. The squat Toripolliisi statue, a humorous representation of the local police, is a local landmark. Made from bronze, the lovable figure is the work of sculptor Kaarlo Mikkonen, and was installed here in 1987.
