Best Places to Visit and Top Tourist Attraction in Chania: Old Harbor, Maritime Museum of Crete, Archaeological Museum, Botanic Park & Gardens of Crete, The Monasteries of Akrotiri Peninsula.

1. Old Harbor

Chania’s historic importance stemmed from its location as a port, and still today, the deep, curving harbor, which gained its present appearance under the Venetians in the 14th century, is its main tourist attraction. However, the old Venetian harbour of Chania would have been just like another beautiful seaside tourist place, if there haven’t been preserved its monuments since the Venetian rule period (1252-1645), the Ottoman rule (1645-1898 ), and the years of the Egyptian domination (1831-1841) that occurred during the Turkish period.

2. Maritime Museum of Crete

The museum collection includes models of ships, nautical instruments, paintings, historical photographs and war relics. The material is classified chronologically, starting from the Bronze Age up to our times.
The exhibits include models of ancient ships and an impressive model of the fortified town and port under Venetian rule. A section of the museum is dedicated to the German invasion of Crete.

3. Archaeological Museum

The Archaeological Museum of Chania is located in the historical centre of the city. It is housed in the former temple (katholikon) of the medieval Franciscan monastery, one of the most important monuments of the Venetian period in Crete (1211-1669). During the period of the Ottoman occupation, the building was converted into a mosque. Its operation as a museum was established in 1963.

4. Botanic Park & Gardens of Crete

With its warm, sunny climate and rich, fertile soils, Crete grows olives and grapes, and even farms tropical fruits, such as avocados and bananas.

5. The Monasteries of Akrotiri Peninsula

The rocky peninsula of Akrotiri, 10 kilometers east of Chania, is home to three monasteries.
