In a green valley enclosed between steep mountainsides, the climbing and winter sports capital of the Valais region is also one of Switzerland’s great international resorts.
Best Places to Visit and Top-Rated Tourist Attractions in Zermatt: Matterhorn, Winter Sports, The Gornergrat Railway, Hinterdorf, Kleines Matterhorn.
Matterhorn
Without the sharp pyramid of the Matterhorn ascending as a sensational setting, Zermatt would be another really minimal Swiss town rather than a world-renowned image of the Alps and of Switzerland itself. Alongside making Zermatt the Swiss ideal example, the mountain characterizes the town and gives it a year-round interest that no other ski resort can coordinate.
Winter Sports
Because of the encompassing ice sheets, Zermatt offers year-round skiing, with ski territory at elevations in the vicinity of 2,500 and 3,900 meters and Switzerland’s most elevated vertical drop, in excess of 2,133 meters. In the late spring, you can ski on the Breithorn level, by means of the cableway to the Kleines Matterhorn, and on the 3,500-meter Plateau Rosa close to the Theodul Pass.
The Gornergrat Railway
The Gornergrat Bahn, Europe’s highest mountain railroad running over open country, takes 45 minutes to climb 10 kilometers to the summit of the Gornergrat. The rack-railroad climbs the east side of Nikolai valley and up the slopes of the Riffelberg in a wide curve, with ever more impressive views of the Matterhorn.
Hinterdorf
Higher up in the town of Zermatt, past the Monte Rosa Hotel (the main cabin worked for early climbers and where you can take a recorded visit), is the Hinterdorf, a warren of limited paths, weathered old wooden chalets, outbuildings, stables, and storage facilities.
Kleines Matterhorn
A standout amongst the most awesome excursions – in a place where terrific view turns out to be relatively normal – is on the most astounding link auto in Europe, from the Trockener Steg toward the north face of the Kleines Matterhorn. From the upper station, there is a lift to the summit of the Kleines Matterhorn, at 3,884 meters.
